Chinese electric vehicle brands show strong growth as summer slowdown ends, with Li Auto, AITO, and XPeng posting major gains.
The new energy vehicle market saw a noticeable rebound in the third week of August (August 18–24), as numerous electric car brands recorded double-digit week-over-week growth. With the summer heatwave holiday period coming to a close, several automakers accelerated production and deliveries, signaling a strong close to the month.
Ideal, Xiaomi, AITO, Fang Cheng Bao, Arcfox, Wuling, Aion, Lynk & Co, Changan, and Chery were among the top-performing new energy car manufacturers, each posting sales increases of over 10% compared to the previous week. Notably, Li Auto, AITO, Changan, and Chery saw their weekly sales surge by more than 20%, reflecting revived consumer interest and improved supply chain conditions.
The electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive, with both established and emerging battery car companies expanding their presence. This boost also suggests that more buyers are turning to new energy cars as a primary option for personal transportation.
Leapmotor achieved a new weekly sales record with 12,100 units sold, securing the top position among emerging automakers and surpassing Tesla in the rankings. The brand now sits just behind Geely’s Galaxy and Wuling in the overall new energy car manufacturer list.
AITO also saw a strong recovery, with weekly sales growing by over 27% as it neared the 10,000-vehicle mark. The company is expected to cross that threshold in the coming week. The rise of these brands illustrates how Chinese electric vehicle producers are increasingly dominating the mid-range EV segment.
XPeng and Xiaomi continued their steady sales growth, holding firm within the top five brands in the start-up OEM ranking. Li Auto recorded a notable 36% increase in weekly sales, reaching 7,600 units with the help of its newly launched i8 model, which has been well-received since its recent delivery start.
This consistent performance from leading electric car makers underscores the vitality of China’s new energy vehicle industry. As more models enter the market, competition is expected to intensify, particularly in the battery-electric and extended-range electric vehicle categories.
Ledo, a relatively new player in the electric vehicle scene, set a new sales record with 4,100 units sold, moving ahead of Deepal to rank sixth among new energy car startups. NIO sold 2,600 units of its mainline models, with its Firefly sub-brand contributing another 883 vehicles. Combined, the company reached 7,600 units for the week—on par with Li Auto.
With the launch of the new NIO ES8 scheduled for late September, the automaker is poised for further sales expansion. The continued innovation and model diversification from companies like NIO highlight the dynamic evolution of the battery car market.
