The latest sales figures for August 2025 are in, and China’s new energy vehicle market continues its impressive expansion. With automakers pushing new models and competitive pricing strategies, consumer enthusiasm shows no sign of slowing down.
In August, wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China reached 1.3 million units, marking a 24% increase compared to the same period last year and a 10% rise month-on-month. Between January and August, cumulative sales hit 8.93 million units—a solid 34% year-on-year growth. This sustained expansion highlights the strong consumer shift toward new energy cars.
BYD maintained its dominant position with 371,501 units sold in August, continuing its streak as the top-selling brand in the new energy car segment. However, the standout performer was Geely Auto, which set a new company record with 147,347 battery car sales—a staggering 95.2% surge compared to last year. This remarkable growth allowed Geely to secure the number two spot in the rankings.
Teslla China, though still a major player, reported 83,192 sales in August. Despite the revamped Model 3 and limited-time discounts boosting its performance, the American automaker is facing intense competition from local manufacturers. Its growth pace has noticeably lagged behind rivals like Geely in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
It wasn’t just the leaders making noise. Leapmotor delivered 57,066 units, making it the top-selling emerging electric car brand for the sixth consecutive month. XPeng also broke its monthly record with 37,709 sales, while Nio followed closely, reaching a new high of 31,305 battery-powered automobiles. The diversity of brands achieving record results underscores the vitality and competitiveness of the sector.
