On November 14th, at the Dongfeng Automotive Yunfeng Plant in Wuhan, Hubei, a new electric vehicle (EV), the Lantu brand pure electric SUV, rolled off the assembly line alongside ten models of new energy cars from ten leading Chinese automobile manufacturers displayed on a large screen. This milestone marked China’s achievement of an annual production capacity of 10 million new energy vehicles (NEVs).

General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized that developing new energy vehicles is the crucial path for China to transition from a major automobile power to a strong automobile nation.

China has become the first country in the world to reach an annual production capacity of 10 million new energy vehicles. This is not only a significant event in the electric vehicle industrial transformation but also a crucial point on China's journey from being a major automotive player to becoming a leading force in the global automotive industry.

The rapid growth from 10,000 units to 10 million units in just 12 years has laid a solid foundation for the intelligent transformation of the automotive industry.

  • In 2012, the annual production was just 13,000 units.

  • By 2018, it had increased to 1.15 million units.

  • In 2024, the annual production is projected to reach 12 million units.

The transition from over 10,000 units to breaking the million-unit mark took just six years. Similarly, it only took another six years for China’s NEV industry to grow from 1 million units to 10 million.

Seizing the historical opportunity of electrification and intelligent transformation, China has taken the lead in switching tracks, fostering new dynamics, and establishing new advantages. In just 12 years, China's new energy vehicle sector has achieved rapid growth from 10,000 to 10 million units and has seized the opportunity to reshape the competitive landscape of the global automotive industry, innovate the industrial model, and create world-class brands.

Rapid Market Expansion

From January to October of this year, China's production and sales of new energy vehicles were 9.779 million and 9.75 million units, up 33% and 33.9% year-over-year, respectively. The sales of new energy vehicles accounted for 39.6% of total new car sales, with new energy passenger cars surpassing traditional fuel vehicles for four consecutive months.

Key Technological Breakthroughs

Significant advancements in key technologies are being made, including large-scale production of ternary battery cells with an energy density of 300 watt-hours per kilogram and the establishment of a comprehensive power battery industry system encompassing basic materials, battery cells, system integration, manufacturing equipment, and recycling. Peak power density of driving motors has exceeded 10 kilowatts per kilogram, with maximum speeds surpassing 20,000 revolutions per minute; the 800V silicon carbide electric drive and 5C ultra-fast charging technologies are being widely adopted.

Enhancing Self-Sufficiency Within the Industry Chain

China has gradually established competitive advantages in the "three electrics" (battery, electric motor, and electronic control) technology, with intelligent cockpits and intelligent driving applications reaching international advanced levels. Mainstream car manufacturers have successively implemented large language models in vehicles and began mass production of advanced intelligent driving systems. Breakthroughs in domestic high-performance computing chips, millimeter-wave radar, and central computing platforms have also been achieved.

"The rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry will lay a solid foundation for the intelligent transformation of the automotive sector. At the same time, China’s first-mover advantage in the transition to new energy is being converted into new momentum for leading the global automotive industry’s transformation, contributing to the green and low-carbon development of the global automotive sector," said Fu Bingfeng, Executive Vice President and Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Boosting Market Penetration

By addressing user pain points regarding low-temperature performance and pure electric range, the expansion of new energy vehicle usage across various regions and scenarios has become feasible. This year, the market share of new energy vehicles is expected to exceed 40%, while projections indicate it will surpass 50% by 2026, gradually taking a dominant position in the automotive market. Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice chairman of the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum, noted that the acceleration of urban navigation assistance-driving, the popularization of fast-charging technology, and improvements in the efficiency of "three electrics" in extremely cold conditions will further broaden the usage geography and scenarios for new energy vehicles.
