NIO’s Third-Generation ES8 Electric SUV Set to Launch in Second Half of 2025

A new chapter in luxury electric vehicles is about to begin. NIO has officially submitted application documents for its all-new flagship SUV—the third-generation ES8—to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Slated for release in the latter half of 2025, this battery car represents a major upgrade in design, technology, and performance.

Built on the NT2.5 Platform with Enhanced Dimensions
The new ES8 is built on NIO’s latest NT2.5 platform. It retains the muscular and sophisticated look of the previous model but introduces subtle refinements. The front end now features a more aggressive, squared-off shut-off grille that sits lower, improving aerodynamics without compromising style. The split-type headlights remain, but the upper daytime running lights have been thickened for a more pronounced look. The lower headlight cluster is expected to include ABD (Adaptive Beam Deflection) technology.

In terms of dimensions, the new electric vehicle measures 5280 mm in length, 2010 mm in width, and 1800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3130 mm. That’s 181 mm longer, 21 mm wider, and 50 mm taller than the outgoing model, with a 60 mm longer wheelbase. These changes promise significantly improved cabin space. The car will be available in both six- and seven-seat configurations.

A Cabin Loaded with Technology and Comfort
Inside, the third-gen ES8 is expected to mirror the minimalist and high-tech layout of the newer ES6. A full-digital instrument cluster is complemented by a 12.8-inch floating central touchscreen and a head-up display (HUD). The center console has been redesigned to use a steering-column-mounted gear selector instead of a rotary shifter, freeing up additional storage space.

The vehicle will also come equipped with the upgraded PanoCinema digital cockpit, support for 360-degree surround-view imaging, built-in navigation, and over-the-air (OTA update capabilities. It’s also rumored to feature a self-developed chip, elevating the infotainment and interaction experience.

Autonomous Driving and Battery Performance
On the autonomy front, this new energy car will be outfitted with NIO’s flagship AQUILA super sensing system, which includes a lidar array in a watchtower configuration on the roof, dual front corner lidars, and 4D imaging radars. It may also feature the self-developed NX9031 chip and NIO’s proprietary World Model—NWM—for smarter, more responsive assisted driving.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output of 520 kW. Buyers can choose between a 75 kWh or 100 kWh ternary lithium battery, offering CLTC-rated ranges of 500 km and 625 km, respectively. Perhaps most impressively, this automobile will support ultra-fast charging at up to 925 volts and 765 amps, peaking at 600 kW. That translates to a 5C charging rate—enough to add 250 km of range in just five minutes.
