The new energy car market continues its explosive growth trajectory in May 2025, with major Chinese automakers reporting significant year-over-year gains. This analysis breaks down the top-performing brands and models in the competitive battery car landscape.

1. BYD Dominates EV Sales
BYD solidified its leadership position, selling an impressive 382,500 electric vehicle units in May alone. Their year-to-date total reached 1,763,400 units, marking a robust 38.7% increase. Within their diverse portfolio:

  • Dynasty and Ocean series sedan and SUV models led with 348,393 sales (+10.5% YoY).

  • Fang Cheng Bao off-road automobile sales surged 418.2% to 12,592 units.

  • Denza luxury car sales grew steadily to 15,806 (+29.3%).

  • The ultra-luxury Yangwang automobile brand delivered 139 units.

  • International new energy car exports, including their electric pickup models, skyrocketed 133.6% to 88,640 units.

2. Geely Group Powers Forward
The Geely conglomerate (Geely, Zeekr, Lynk & Co) reported total May sales of 235,208 passenger car units (+46% YoY). Their electric vehicle performance was particularly strong:

  • Group battery car sales hit 138,021 units (+135.2% YoY), pushing their 2025 total past 600,000.

  • Geely brand sales reached 188,670, driven by the popular Galaxy series sedan line (101,845 units, +273%).

  • Lynk & Co delivered 27,630 automobile units (+27%), with 63% being new energy car variants (17,268 units).

  • Zeekr premium electric vehicle sales jumped to 18,908 units (+38% MoM).

  • Overseas shipments of their car models totaled 30,017 units (+24% MoM).

3. Leapmotor Hits Record High
Leapmotor achieved a historic milestone, delivering 45,067 battery car units in May – a massive 148.1% increase compared to last year. Their affordable electric vehicle lineup continues gaining strong traction.

4. Harmony Intelligence (Hongmeng Zhixing) Shows Strength
The Harmony Intelligence alliance delivered 44,454 new energy car units across its brands:

  • AITO M9 (2025): 15,481 units.

  • AITO M8: 12,116 units.

  • AITO New M7: 4,139 units.

  • AITO New M5 Ultra: 4,889 units.

  • Luxeed R7 sedan: 5,124 units.

  • Stelato S9 EREV automobile: Over 2,000 units.

5. Li Auto Maintains Steady Growth
Li Auto delivered 40,856 premium electric vehicle units in May (+16.7% YoY), bringing their cumulative deliveries to over 1.3 million car units since inception.

6. XPeng Accelerates Deliveries
XPeng Motors saw remarkable growth, delivering 33,525 battery car units (+230.4% YoY). Their tech-focused automobile lineup has accumulated 162,578 deliveries in the first five months of 2025 (+293%).

7. Great Wall Motor Expands Globally
Great Wall Motor (GWM) sold 102,231 car units overall (+11.78% YoY). Their new energy car segment contributed 32,638 units in May, while overseas shipments of their pickup trucks and SUVs reached 34,535 units.

8. Xiaomi Enters the Fray Strongly
Xiaomi Motors, the tech giant's ambitious electric vehicle venture, reportedly delivered over 28,000 units of its highly anticipated SU7 sedan in May – a formidable entry into the automobile market.

9. GAC Aion Holds Steady
GAC Aion recorded sales of 26,777 battery car units, maintaining a solid presence in the competitive new energy car segment.

10. Deepal Gains Momentum
Deepal Auto delivered 25,521 electric vehicle units, showcasing impressive growth (+77.6% YoY, +26.7% MoM) for its stylish sedan and SUV offerings.

11. NIO Sees Moderate Growth
NIO delivered 23,231 premium electric vehicle units (+13.1% YoY), continuing its focus on the high-end automobile market with battery swap technology.

12. BAIC BJEV & Arcfox Surge

  • BAIC BJEV (incl. Arcfox): Sales soared 215.11% YoY to 17,120 new energy car units.

  • Arcfox: Achieved a record 13,509 battery car deliveries (+200.20% YoY), highlighting strong demand for its premium car models.

13. Avatr Tech Growth Continues
Avatr maintained impressive momentum, selling 12,767 intelligent electric vehicle units (+179.4% YoY), strengthening its niche in tech-laden premium automobile offerings.

14. Voyah Exceeds 10k Mark
Voyah (Lan Tu) crossed the 10,000-unit threshold, delivering 10,022 premium new energy car units (+121.7% YoY), rounding out the top contenders.
