Can Electric Cars Conquer the Market by 2025?

Reflecting on 2023, Volkswagen China achieved a commendable "report card": delivering over 3.2 million automobiles throughout the year, marking a 1.6% increase compared to 2022. According to Volkswagen, "This is a very noteworthy achievement as we are the only internationally established car manufacturer maintaining large-scale sales with year-over-year growth in the Chinese market."

However, the competition in the Chinese car market is increasingly fierce. Taking the electric vehicle (EV) market as an example, currently, about 100 brands are vying for market share. Just last year, nearly 70 new electric vehicle models were launched. The entire Chinese car market is undergoing a reshuffling, presenting Volkswagen with growing challenges.

Over the past year, Volkswagen's global headquarters invested significant effort in exploring the future prospects of China's new energy car market, examining the relationship between previous forecasts and actual developments. Initially, the prediction was that the Chinese new energy car market would see a real turning point in 2027 or 2028, with these automobiles becomin the mainstream in sales. However, after months of discussion, Volkswagen headquarters decided to revise this forecast forward to around 2025.

Throughout the development of new energy cars, plug-in hybrid vehicles are expected to see a robust short-term growth. Simultaneously, electric vehicles will continue their upward trend. After 2030, among the new energy cars, which will constitute 75% of the total car market, the growth of electric cars is anticipated to surpass that of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Overall, plug-in hybrids are considered a transitional technological solution.

Based on this assessment, Volkswagen's strategy is to launch at least 30 electric car models by 2030. At the same time, it will significantly upgrade and optimize its entire lineup of fuel-based automobiles, facilitating their transition to new energy through hybridization. Efforts like these will further aid the transformation of their entire product lineup towards electric vehicles and new energy options.
